Liverpool is directly opposite Dublin, the capital of the Irish Republic on the other side of the Irish Sea. It is also very close to Englands border with North Wales at about 12 miles from the Pier Head, if a straight line is taken south-west over the River Mersey, the Wirral pennisula and the River Dee beyond that. At 120 miles to the north of Liverpool is England's Border with Scotland and north-west of Liverpool in the middle of the Irish Sea is the Isle of Man, a crown dependency which is not part of the United Kingdom. On the 28th of August 1207, "Liverpul" was made a city by King John. Robert Morden's map of England dated 1695 gives the spelling as "Leverpool". |
