In 1829 a passenger steamer service was established between Liverpool and Douglas after the English began to visit the island in the summer.

Located at Port Erin is "Milner's Tower" which was erected in 1871 as a memorial to William Milner, a Liverpool safe maker. The tower was an acknowledgment of Milner's many benefactions to Port Erin.
