The city is located 20 miles south-west of Sydney and was founded in 1810 making it one of the oldest urban settlements in Australia. It was named after Robert Banks Jenkinson who was "Earl of Liverpool" and at the time the Secretary of State for the Colonies.

This Liverpool which is situated on the Georges River is the largest Liverpool outside England and is still growing.
