Tower Building near the Pier HeadThe present Tower Building was completed in 1908 and replaced a large office block of the same name built in 1856 by J.A.Picton.

Tower Building is also built on the site of "The Tower" which was owned by the Stanley family. It is interesting that the current building is within site of the Isle of Man ferry terminal since "The Tower" was the home of Sir John Stanley, who through marriage, gained possession of the extensive estates of the Lathom family and "was given leave by the Crown" to fortify his house at the foot of Water Street in 1406. "The Tower", then near the water’s edge, served the Stanleys for centuries as a place of embarkation for the Isle of Man, the Lordship of which had been granted to Sir John by King Henry IV in 1405.
