Bibby's New Oil Mill completed in 1917 [Photo: Stewart Bale Ltd]It was designed before World War I and work started on Bibby's "New Oil Mill" on Waterloo Road during that war. Due to vital machinery being sent to the bottom of the Atlantic on its way from America, the facility could not be completed until 1917.

The building was claimed to be one of the most heavily constructed in Britain. Together with adjacent buildings in Formby Street and Neptune Street it formed the largest and most versatile seed crushing complex in the world.

At the bottom right of the photo can be seen the Overhead Railway which passed alongside the building.
