TRAM TIMELINE

Here is a timeline including some key events leading to the creation and the final destruction of Liverpool's fine tram system.

Date Event
25-Mar-1807 Horse drawn passenger cars start operating on the "Swansea & Mumbles Railway" in Wales.
1832 The first (horse drawn) urban tramway is built in New York by John Stephenson (line stopped operating about 1834).
1852 A new tramway starts in New York running on 6th Avenue.
1855 Four additional new tram lines start in New York and trams start operatng in Boston and New Orleans.
1856 William Joseph Curtis' patent for a road-rail omnibus as will be used in Liverpool on "The Line of Docks Railway".
Mar-1859 Liverpool's first "street railway" operates on "The Line of Docks Railway" in Liverpool.
1860 George F Train moves into the street railway business in Liverpool after the Dock Board starts charging operators to use rails.
Aug-1860 George F Train's Birkenhead Street Railway is opened.
2-Jul-1861 The Old Swan Tramway is opened in Liverpool (Closed in 1862).
1865 The Liverpool Tramways Company Ltd is formed (initially there is sample tram track).
1868 Liverpool is the first city to get an "act of parliament" for a local tramway service.
27-Jul-1869 Track laying is started (opposite the Pineapple Hotel in Park Road) for the Liverpool Tramways Company Ltd.
1-Nov-1869 The first Liverpool Tramways Company tramcar leaves Dingle driven by Alfred Williams.
1-Jan-1882 The first "punch type" tickets are introduced on Liverpool trams.
1-Sep-1897 Liverpool Corporation Tramways takes over tram operation from the Liverpool United Tramways & Omnibus Co. Ltd.
14-Nov-1898 The first electric tram in full trial service leaves Dingle.
1945 Liverpool City Council decides to scrap it's tram system and replace it with buses.
7-Nov-1947 A fire at Green Lane Depot destroys 66 trams.
12-Jun-1948 A nine year programme of tram route closures is implemented when routes 26 & 27 are the first to stop operating.
14-Sep-1957 The last day of Liverpool tram operations with the closure of the last two routes 6A & 40 and the "final procession".
