The Manx Electric Railway is just under 18 miles long and operates between Derby Castle at the north end of Douglas Promenade and Ramsey.

The electric railway first opened from Douglas to Groudle in 1893 and the line was extended to Laxey in 1894. There was a further extension to the outskirts of Ramsey in 1898 and then finally in to the town itself in 1899.

The railway was taken over by the Manx Government in 1958.
