Walton station is situated between Kirkdale and Orrell Park stations. It is now on Merseyrail's Northern Line and is on a branch running north-east to Ormskirk.
The station was formerly part of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and known as Walton Junction. It was originally opened on the 2nd of April 1849 and the line was electrified in 1906.
