Southport station is a northern limit for Merseyrail's "Northern Line". The station opened in 1851 as "Southport Chapel Street" station. The terminius also provides train services to other locations by means of the tracks travelling east of the station.

The photo on the right shows a train on the Liverpool service at a platform in the left of the picture. Liverpool bound trains turn sharply to their right after departing the station to start their journey south.
