Roby Station now sits on Merseyrail's "City Line" between Broad Green and Huyton. It is also located on what was originally the Liverpool and Manchester Railway which opened in 1830. Like Broad Green and Huyton the previous four track station was later cut back to two tracks and two platforms following railway system downsizing in the 1960s. However, like Huyton, the removed two tracks and platforms have since been rebuilt in conjunction with electrification.

In the view on the right, taken in 1980, plants and trees can be seen growing on the left of the picture, were the lifted tracks and platforms 3 and 4 used to be.

Shown also in this photo at platform 1 is a westbound Derby built "Diesel Multiple Unit" (DMU) train led by unit M56275. These class 108 units were introduced about 1959 to replace steam hauled trains. They were subsequently replaced theselves by 4 wheel class 142 units before the electrification of the line when refurbished class 319 EMU trains were introduced.
