Rice Lane station was opened on the 20th of November 1848 as Preston Road. It used to be part of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway but now forms part of the Merseyrail network Northern Line on the branch to Kirkby.
On the 14th of May 1984, the station was renamed Rice Lane.
