Rainhill is famous for being the site of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway's locomotive trials in 1829. The location had been chosen because the track was level for nearly two miles. Spectators came from all over the country to witness the trials which were held on the 6th to 14th October.

The present station dates from about 1860. The starting point for the trials was a little west of the present station. The original station was further east of the present one and named "Kendricks Cross".
