With the demise of the mainline stations at Exchange and Central, Lime Street Station became central Liverpool's remaining mainline rail terminus. With the formation of Merseyrail and creation of the underground loop line in the 1970s, there is also an interconnected underground station.

The photo on the right is a view looking down on the station beyond the two large canopies.

The station was originally part of the London and North Western Railway and opened on 15th August 1836 as a replacement for Crown Street Station, the terminus of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The deep cuttings to Edge Hill were originally tunnels that were opened-up between 1870 and 1881. Until 1870 when locomotives were allowed to operate through the tunnels, trains were lowered from Edge Hill by rope.
