Huyton station now forms part of the Merseyrail "City Line" but sits on the route of the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway of 1829 which was the worlds first inter-city railway. Huyton is the last station before the branch off to Wigan at "Huyton Junction". The photo on the right taken in the mid 1970s shows platforms 3 and 4 still in place after they had been taken out of service. Grass can be seen growing between the platforms from the track bed. These platforms, which had served trains travelling to and from Wigan were demolished but have since been rebuilt as modern platforms in conjunction with overhead electrification of the line.

Old stone sleepers from the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway can be seen reused in the base of the wall of the main station building on platform 1.
