Hamilton Square station is the first stop for Merseyrail "Wirral Line" trains that have just passed under the River Mersey from Liverpool. The line was originally the Mersey Railway which officially opened on the 20th of January, 1886.

The photo on the right shows the station with a train heading to towards Chester. Trains from Liverpool go one of two ways after departing from Hamilton Square either north to New Brighton and West Kirby or south to Chester.
