Earlestown station sits on the route of the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway which now forms part of the Merseyrail "City Line".

The staion is particularly interesting since there is also a junction with a line going south to Warrington. There was once six platforms serving each of the two track combinations - west/east, west/south and east/south. The east/south platforms are remote from the other platforms and require a walk via a long path to that part of the station.

The photo on the right is a view of the staion from the western side and is taken after the west/south link had been reduced to single track operation with the removal of one platform.
