Crown Street was the original terminal station of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Sadly none of the station has survived but the main building is understood to have been built from sandstone similar to Edge Hill station. Edge Hill was built after Crown Street but the main station building has a similar basic arrangement. Crown Street closed to passengers in 1836 and then became a coal yard which operated up to the late 20th century. The photo on the right shows the site of the station in 1975.
