Cressington station is on a former Cheshire Lines route which now forms part of Merseyrail's "Northern Line" and is situated between Aigburth and Liverpool South Parkway stations. The station was originally opened on the 1st of March 1873, the line being opened on the 1st of June 1864. Between 1877 and its closure in 1972 the station was known as "Cressington & Grassendale". When the line reopened in 1978 as an electrified route the name was changed back to the original one.

The photo on the right shows the main station building with direct access to the footbridge due to the low track level relative to the surrounding roads.
