Aigburth station is now situated on Merseyrail's "Northern Line" but was originally part of Cheshire Lines. The station originally opened as "Mersey Road" when the line had first openend on the 1st of June 1864. In 1880 it was renamed Mersey Road & Aigburth. On the 17th of April 1972 the station closed and was reopened as Aigburth when the electrified "Northern Line" opened on the 3rd of January 1978.
