When Liverpool's first directory was published in 1766 the city's population was only about 30,000. The top surnames from directory entries were then as follows.

By 1860 Liverpool's population had increased at least 15 fold to about 460,000 with considerably increased directory entries. The most common family names had by then changed with a noted increase in those of Welsh origin. The top family names were as follows.
