Bamber Gascoyne (1724-1791), the son of Sir Crisp Gascoyne (~1700-1761) married Mary Greene in 1756. She had inherited Childwall Hall along with land at West Derby, Wavertree, Everton and Woolton in 1749. Their son also Bamber Gascoyne was born in 1758 and settled at Childwall. He was an MP between 1780 and 1796 and also a slave trade "anti-abolitionist", along with fellow Liverpool MP Lord Penrhyn. This Bamber Gascoyne died at Stanhope Street in 1824. Another member of the family, Frances Mary Gascoigne married James Brownlow William Cecil in 1821. The TV presenter Bamber Gascoigne, who became well known from hosting "University Challenge" is a desecendent of this family also. |
