A famous River Mersey ferry boatFerry boats have crossed the River Mersey for many hundreds of years. Daniel Defoe, author of 'Robinson Crusoe', made several visits to Liverpool between 1680 and 1715 and recorded a description of his journey on a Mersey Ferry boat.

Larger vessels with vehicle "roll on roll off" facilities also travel across the Irish Sea from Liverpool with services operating to Isle of Man, Dublin and Belfast.
