The Ancient Chapel of Toxteth on Park RoadToxteth is immediately south of the city centre in the Liverpool 8 area. Toxteth takes its name from Toxteth Park, a large area originally south of the city of Liverpool which became absorbed as the city grew.

In 1618, one of Liverpool's greatest sons, Jeremiah Horrox was born in Toxteth. Horrox may have been a pupil of Richard Mather, the puritan minister of Toxteth Chapel who emigrated to America. At age 14 in 1632, Horrox gained a place at Cambridge. He went on to become famous for his astonomy work which fifty years later was used as the basis of work done by Isaac Newton.
