Southport is located about 20 miles north of Liverpool on the coast of the Irish Sea and just north of the mouth of the River Mersey.

Southport rail station is at the northern limit of Merseyrail's "Northern Line" that runs from south Liverpool, through the city centre and then north of the city.

With a population of over 91,000 (2001 census), Southport is one of the larger satellite towns to Liverpool and is located in the metropolitan borough of Sefton.
