Smithdown might not be thought of as a district in Liverpool but in fact it was a township in its own right before being absorbed long ago by the expanding city. When the Doomsday book was written in 1086, it was known as Esmedun and has also been known as Smeddon in the past.

The area now forms part of Liverpool 15.
