The remains of Roby Cross of 1304 at the junction of Roby Road and Carr LaneRoby is situated immediately east of the city of Liverpool and is located on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway which opened in 1830.

The first settlers at Roby in the early 10th century are thought to have been Norsemen who came indirectly via Ireland or Isle of Man. The name originates from "ra" (meaning a landmark) and "by" (meaning farmstead or village).

In 1304 Robert de Latham obtained a charter for a market and fair at Roby.
