When King William did his Domesday survey in 1086, Huyton was included in the record for Cheshire and was known as "Hitune". Huyton is less than 10 miles east of the city centre. It is located on the route of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway opened in 1830 and just north of the modern M62 motorway.
One of the most famous Huytonians is Rex Harrison (born as Reginald Carey Harrison) who lived on Tarbock Road in a semi-detached house that still stands today. Others include the comedian Freddie Star and the clasical music conductor Sir Thomas Beecham who founded the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The former Prime Minister, Harold Wilson was also MP for Huyton and his statue sits outside the Post Office in Derby Road.
The home of the Beecham family "Ewanville" was near "The Rooley", a road off Tarbock Road not far from the Harrison home. Sir Joseph Beecham, father of Sir Thomas and son of the founder of Beecham's medicinal pill business, moved his family to Huyton in 1885 having purchased a house and 10 acres of land.
