The Childwall Abbey HotelThe name Childwall means "field of the well" and come from old Norse. At the time of the Domesday Book, the spelling was "Cildeuuelle" with the spelling "Childwall" appearing as early as 1259.

Childwall is located east of the city centre and in the Liverpool 16 area of the city. It became part of the City of Liverpool in 1913.

In 1718, Isaac Greene puchased manors in Woolton and Childwall including Childwall Hall, which was pulled down in 1953 to make way for a County College. Bamber Gascoyne was born in 1758 and settled at Childwall. He was an MP between 1780 and 1796 and also a slave trade "anti-abolitionist" who died 1824.

Childwall Abbey Hotel dates from the early 17th century in parts. The original inn has an association with the Marquis of Salisbury. It has been a favourite haunt of actors and distinguished visitors to Liverpool, especially in Victorian times.
