The history of the Isle of Man can be split in to five time periods as follows:-
| (1) the Celtic period | (pre 800) |
| (2) the Norse period | (800 - 1266) |
| (3) the Scottish/English period | (1266 - 1405) |
| (4) the Stanley, Derby and Atholls | (1405 - 1765) |
| (5) the post-Revestment period | (1765 -) |
