Halsalls are known to have lived in Liverpool as early as the 16th century. An Edward Halsall was Mayor of the city in ]1579-1580 and 1586-1587. There was also a Sir Cuthbert Halsall who held the same post in 1615-1616. In 1667 a William Halsall owned about 55 acres of land in Everton. The Liverpool Collegiate School, opened in 1843, was built on part of the estate of this Halsall family. In 1708 when a survey was made by Henry Peet, it recorded that there were branches of the Halsall family in Tithebarn Street along with Tyrers and Rigbys. However, it is not as yet known if any of these Halsalls are related to my own or not. A number of Halsalls living prior to the year 1700 have been identified. A list of Halsalls associated with Liverpool in 1881 either by birth or by address at the time of the census in England has been contructed.
In reference 3 an Edward Halsall (17 years of age) is mentioned as keeping a diary of events during a siege at Lathom House in 1844 when the Earl of Derby had left for the Isle of Man. His family was reputed to have lived at Halsall for fourteen generations. See a map showing the location of Halsall in north west England. In 1534, Sir Henry Halsall of Halsall bought the de Holland family manor at Holland (now DownHolland) near Halsall.
