There are a number of Furbys living in Australia today including those descending from John William Furby born 1787 and his wife Sarah. In 1831, John Furby and Thomas Furby were convicted at the Old Bailey in London and sent to Australia. They may have been brothers though they travelled to Australia on different ships - "Georgina" (John) and "Exmouth" (Thomas).


Descendents of Edward Furby born ~1844
Edward is believed to have been born in Yorkshire. His son, also Edward was born at Berwick-upon-Tweed about 1870. The family left Plymouth on the 20th November 1875 on the "Earl of Dalhousie" and arrived at Sydney on the 15th February 1876.

Descendents of James Samuel Furby born 1823
Our John William Furby (born 1787) had a son James Samuel Furby who was born in 1823 and married Ann Maria Thwaites in 1843. Their son, John James Furby who was born in 1845 in Bethnal Green, London emigrated to Queensland and married there in 1874. They have descendents in Australia today

Descendents of George Frederick Furby born 1849 (Family Tree#22)
Another son of our John William Furby (born 1787) was George Frederick Furby who was born at Lambeth in 1820. George Frederick married Mary Ann Smith at St.Matthews, Bethnal Green on 9th September 1839. They had a son also named George Frederick who was born in Homerton on 21st April 1849.

George Frederick junior left London on 25th September 1866 and arrived in Adelaide, South Australia (via Plymouth) onboard the "Canterbury" on 31st December 1866. He married Mary Jane Yeats at Kalangadoo in Penola Parish in 1872 and had four children Clara Frances Furby (1874-1874), Alice Jane Furby (1875-1875), Gertude Emily Furby (b.1878) and Rita Beatrice Furby (b.1892). The photo on the right shows George Frederick Furby taken circa 1918 at Melbourne with his wife (left) and daughters Gertrude Emily (1st from right) and Rita Beatrice (right).

At the time of his emmigration, George Frederick is recorded as a painter aged 18 years but later became a carpenter in Australia as shown in census records and 1930 death certificate.
